Official Bugfixes and PatchesOverview

DOS (Patch 1.2)

  1. You have to start a new game to make the changes effective.
  2. Only the memory address and the DMA channel have to be selected in the setup. For some people the selection of the IRQ had led to an error
  3. This patch includes a newer version of the Dos extension DOS4GW. In earlier versions there were sometimes problems with the old version.
  4. Failed headings sometimes caused multiple images to be displayed at once. This is now fixed.
  5. The action points are set to a maximum of "80", thus solving another problem.
  6. The variety of missions is increased, now all mission types that exist can occur.
  7. The alien intelligence is increased, so the game becomes a little more challenging.
  8. The UFO encyclopedia is extended to include missing entries.
  9. The broken file: UBASE_07.MAP will be replaced with a correct version. So there are no more problems when starting a mission with this map.
  10. There is no PC Speaker Support anymore for UFO.
  11. The bug with the environment memory is fixed.

DOS (Patch 1.4)

  1. new sound effects and music files. This patch changes the sound effects, e.g. when clicking a button or when an alien dies. From an acoustic point of view, these files are better, but there are many fans who prefer to swear by the old files. So it's a matter of taste who uses which sound files. These sound files are also used in the CE ( collectors Edition).
  2. You can change the music volume with the "+" and "-" keys on the number pad while you are in the geoscreen (globe) and when you are in the tacti area (insert).

Windows(Graphic Patch)

  1. INSTRUCTION:
    Extract these files into the appropriate installation folder of the game. I.e. extract the files "ldr_XCOM1.exe" and "patch.dll" into the directory where the file UFO Defense.exe is located.
  2. This patch fixes the grotesque graphic distortions under Windows. Otherwise nothing happens.

  1. Corrects the bug with the difficulty level
  2. Corrects the bug that crashes the game after starting a level.
  3. Removes the copy protection from Ufo.
  4. Allows all 5 X-com spaceships to transport men.
  5. Enlarges the hold of all 5 X-Com spaceships.
  6. Allows mixed games, then UFO cards can be played in "Terror from the Deep" and reversed.
  7. Sorts soldiers by firing rank and saves their equipment configuration.
  8. There is an option for an improved version of the original weapons in the game.
  9. Allows you to play day/night missions only.
  10. Allows the selection of the terrain and the existing UFOs in a soil insert (Part1&Part2).
  11. Explore the sword as new dependencies on captured aliens are introduced.
  12. Allows you to change aliens and their armament during a mission.
  13. Adds a simulation of a ground operation to complete an operation automatically.
  14. Allows a random generator for the appearance of the world and UFOs (Part1&Part2).
  15. Allows you to play custom cards and other features.

  1. INSTRUCTION:
    This part describes how to use the X-COM Util to fix bugs without changing the whole game. The problem is, that when executing the file XcuSetup.bat besides the changes of the difficulty bug the settings for the bases and the spaceships are changed. There is now a possibility to change this file so that only the bugs are fixed without changing the game. Download this version of XcuSetup.zip and overwrite the original file from XCOMUTIL. Then only the bugs will be fixed and the rest of the changes can be ignored.

  2. One recognizes also with the start of XCOMUTIL what is changed. The following lines appear in the unmodified version:
    Patch Applied: Ship statistics set from XCOMUTIL.CFG
    Patch Applied: Difficulty levels enabled
    Patch Applied: Area data set from XCOMUTIL.CFG
    Patch Applied: Disjoint bases fixed and new maps added
  3. You can also modify the file very easily. Just open the file XcuSetup.batin an editor and search for the line xcomutil ufoexe shp:cfg map:cfg wrt XcuSetup (CTRL+F).
    Then you have to change this line to xcomutil ufoexe wrt XcuSetup and only the bugfixes are made and the copy protection is removed. But be careful, always pay attention to upper and lower case, otherwise the whole thing won't work.
  4. After the change the whole thing looks like this:

(Windows version) Graphic filter + old sound effects + time Geoscape

  1. The old sound files from the old Dos version will now be used
  2. The time lapse in Geoscape is equal to the real time (but slower)

  5. INSTRUCTION:
    To install the patch, simply unzip the files from the ZIP archive into the game directory.
    !!! It is advisable to create a backup of your X-Com folder before !!!
    You can increase the update speed of the geoscape time by using a hex editor and opening the EXE file. Then jump to Offset 68EF7 hex. The default speed is 1000ms update rate (1 second = 5 seconds in game). If you want to make it faster, you can simply change the value there. For 1000 ms there is the value E8,03if you want an update speed of 100ms (1 second = 50 seconds in the game) in the game, then you have to enter e.g. the following 64,03
